  • Does Imam al-Asr has authority to collect and utilize Khums?
    Yes

  • What is Khums?
    Khums is an Islamic income tax, which is 1/5 (20%) of the remaining of yearly income, after all legitimate expenses have been paid. As mentioned in al-Qur'an:

Know that whatever of a thing you acquire, a fifth of it is for Allah, for the Messenger, for the near relative, and the orphans and the needy and they way farer... al-Qur'an 8:41

  • What is Zakat al-Fitrah?
    It is religious tax/alms (zakat) paid on the day when Muslims break the fasting period at the end of the month of Ramadhan. This zakat should be set aside before the eve of Eid al-Fitr, any time during the month of Ramadan, and paid on Eid day to the deserving poor or to the office of the Marja’ or his authorized representative. A duty-bound person must pay zakat al-fitrah on behalf of themselves and their dependents including guests who arrive before the eve of Eid and stay the night. 
  • How much Zakat al-Fitrah do I need to pay?
    The minimum estimated value of zakat al-fitrah in the United States is $10.00 per eligible person. The amount is based on 6.6 pounds of a common basic food commodity such as rice or wheat (flour). Click here to learn more about amount of zakat al-fitrah.
